A Season's Assemblage
by CLEOPATRA MAGWARO

Picture

"A Season's Assemblage" is the title of Cleopatra Magwaro's first anthology of short stories.  This anthology was self-published in October 2009 in Harare, Zimbabwe.  Most of the short stories in this anthology were written by Magwaro while she was a law student in Queensland, Australia.

This first anthology consists of seven (7), short stories in the literature genre.  Each story is strong and resonates in the reader's mind as clearly as any spoken word and yet each individual piece of work vibrates with an appeal reminiscent of classical literature with a uniquely African rhythm and form of storytelling, known in Zimbabwe as 'ngano'....  Magwaro's stories are also her own, they are not an adaptation of folk lore but they pay homage to folk lore due of their expressiveness.

The stories in "A Season's Assemblage," range from those that embrace elemental simplicity to those that are deeply poignant and intricate.  The language and style of these works is fashioned by Magwaro's love for language and people.  Her characters are often marginalized but by no means unsophisticated.

Magwaro's perspectives are current and informative and give a refreshing interpretation of the emotional depth and intelligence, not only of Africans, but of people everywhere.

Magwaro's stories mingle the Oral and Literary styles of storytelling, to create an enduring voice as you have never read before.  The work is bundled with conviction and compassion and is at once provocative, with its plethora of symbolism and dream-like poetic essence.
